Uzbekistan is visiting a delegation of the Regional Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for Central Asia, headed by the director of this branch Richard Comenda.
The purpose of the visit is to discuss the priority areas of cooperation in the field of human rights, as well as joint implementation of the activities envisaged in the Action Plan for further development of cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, adopted by the joint decision of the Council of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Council of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan on June 16 this year.
The Regional Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for Central Asia was opened in 2008 in Bishkek and covers Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
The mandate of the Regional Office includes interaction with governments, intergovernmental organizations, civil society, the private sector and UN partners in developing and implementing strategies, programs and measures to promote and protect human rights in the countries of Central Asia, strengthening the capacities of governments and civil society, including national human rights institutions.
The thematic priorities for 2014-2017 are the expansion of the democratic space, the enhancement of the effectiveness of international human rights mechanisms, the development of international norms and standards in the field of human rights, the fight against impunity, and the promotion of the rule of law.
The Office carries out activities to empowering governments, national human rights institutions and civil society, including in the areas of fair trial, prevention of torture.
During the visit of the delegation, meetings are scheduled with representatives of ministries, law enforcement agencies, national human rights institutions, civil society institutions of our country. Those include the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Justice, Internal Affairs, the General Prosecutor’s Office, the Supreme Court, and the National Center for Human Rights of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Oliy Majlis Authorized Person for Human Rights, as well as the Center for the Advanced Training of Lawyers under the Ministry of Justice, the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan, the Chamber of Advocates. Also, a meeting is projected of members of the delegation with students of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy.
